What is REDU? - Reverse Engineering Services

As part of our continuous drive to keep innovation at the forefront of our service capability, TSC has developed a process known as REDU (Re-engineering and Design Up). REDU is designed to support our customers who are experiencing issues of obsolete or difficult to obtain spares and components which have the potential to disrupt their business operations.

The first part of the REDU process is that of reverse engineering a customer's component and involves producing a set of engineering drawings of the parts in question, utilising sophisticated co-ordinate measuring machines (CMM's). This may be carried out in-house utilising the extremely accurate fixed CMM machine when a component can be delivered to our workshop or the equally accurate portable CMM equipment when the component does not lend itself to be moved from a customer's location.

As we measure the component a 3-D image can be rendered from the data collected using very sophisticated 3-D engineering design software. It is this data collection process that forms the core of REDU, as it provides the base data for our engineers to intricately analyse the parts and get to work in designing and reproducing parts and components with very high degrees of accuracy for our customers.

If the components going through the REDU process require modification or a design change and always in consultation with the customer, this is where the 'design up' part comes in. It is this 'design-up' process which makes REDU such a remarkable concept. We take the reverse-engineered design and ask ourselves questions which enable us to fully understand the functional requirements by reviewing the original process involved in manufacturing the component and establish the best solution to meet our customer's needs.

Another extremely important part of the REDU process is that of material identification an specification, whether for upgrading purposes or simply because the component to be re-engineered is so old, that the materials of construction and the method of manufacture are unknown, this is where PMI (Positive Materials Identification) comes into play. This part of the process recognises the original material of construction allowing the design engineer to determine if an upgrade is required.

The benefits of the REDU process are considerable and can yield substantial cost benefits to those who utilise the service. Some of the benefits of REDU have been listed to demonstrate the possibilities of looking at the process as a method of upgrading or replacing equipment.

  • Improved efficiency
  • Reduced operating costs
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Improved performance
  • Increased MTBF
  • Increased component life
  • Warranty availability
  • Spares for obsolete equipment
  • Shorter lead times
  • Material upgrades
  • Use of surface coatings
  • Reduced capital spend

Our REDU process provides you the customer with the unique opportunity to acquire parts and components with design and material upgrades tailored specifically to your operational needs – making use of the latest technological advances.

With our REDU process, our vast experience as an OEM and expertise in remediation techniques we consider ourselves uniquely positioned to return your present equipment, regardless of original manufacturer, to "like new" condition or better – not just parts but full machine upgrades. We can customise, rebuild or remanufacture to your specifications with technical and manufacturing expertise readily available by our experienced staff, and provide a warranty that is equal to that of new equipment.

In the case of complete machines TSC will carry out an initial inspection, disassemble the equipment, examine individual components using NDT, where appropriate and remediate, repair or replace components as required, re-assemble; test and despatch back to the customer. All repairs are digitally photographed throughout the repair stages to provide a full record of the work process.

The customer controls the entire process and determines the degree of refurbishment ranging from a general clean up to complete remanufacture to include the latest technical upgrades. All of this, is of course, underpinned by our extensive quality control and management system with built in materials traceability. Our customers can also be comfortable in the knowledge that we are available to support you on a 24 hour/365 day basis to provide a back-up service.

The conservation of value of the equipment that is remanufactured versus equipment that is bought new is high, due to the relative costs of material, labour, energy, and the contribution made to sustainable development. In short, our repair service preserves much of the value while adding a second life to our customer's equipment.

At TSC we guarantee that whatever type of upgrade you request you will have peace in the knowledge that all of the work follows a quality inspection plan throughout the entire process irrespective of complexity of the work involved. Our total commitment to quality means reverse engineered parts from TSC will meet or exceed your requirements.
